Sketching in Material: Unlearning the conventional way

Unlearning the existing methods of drawing bodies in art and design by suggesting an
alternative starting point and sketching method.

This workshop challenges the existing drawing methods by sketching in different materials and investigating the artistic potential of alternative forms and bodily expressions. This exploration results in openness towards art and design thinking and generates dialogue regarding the scale and proportions of the body concerning sketching using materials.

WORKSHOP BRIEF:  The prevalent method of sketching in art and design is primarily based on the ‘nine heads’ reference, wherein the body is divided into nine equal sections from the head to the ankles. This method facilitates the drawing of shape, form, and constructional design details when making a dress, but limits exploration of the silhouette. This workshop challenges the existing drawing methods by sketching in different materials and investigating the artistic potential of alternative forms and bodily expressions. This exploration results in openness towards art and design thinking and generates dialogue regarding the scale and proportions of the body concerning sketching using materials. The outcome of the workshop contributes to unlearning the existing methods of drawing bodies in art and design by suggesting an alternative starting point and sketching method.

LEARNING OUTCOME:

  • Learn to utilize a variety of materials for sketching, expanding toolkits beyond traditional pencil and paper.

  • Experiment with and create sketches that explore alternative bodily forms and expressions, pushing the boundaries of traditional figure drawing.

  • Cultivate an openness in design thinking, encouraging dialogue about scale, proportions, and the potential of different materials in the sketching process.
